What Are Dog Sports?
Dog sports are organized activities and competitions that allow dogs and their owners to work together, have fun, stay active, and develop stronger bonds. From beginner-friendly dog events to national championship competitions, dog sports provide opportunities for dogs of all breeds, sizes, ages, and skill levels to participate in exciting activities designed to showcase speed, athleticism, intelligence, and teamwork.
There are many types of dog sports available throughout the United States. Popular canine sports include agility, where dogs navigate obstacle courses; flyball, a fast-paced relay race between teams of dogs; dock diving, where dogs leap into water for distance or height; disc dog competitions that showcase athletic catches and jumping ability; nose work, which tests scent-detection skills; barn hunt, which highlights natural hunting instincts; and Fast CAT, a timed sprint event that measures a dog’s speed over a short distance.
Dog racing is another exciting and rapidly growing dog sport. Organizations such as Backyard Dog Racing League (BDRL) provide family-friendly dog racing events where everyday pet dogs can compete in a safe, welcoming environment.
